About Me

I have been living in Vancouver since 2002. Professionally, I teach and conduct research at the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Asian Research. For the academic year 2016-17, I’m living in Berlin, Germany.

I have been commuting on a daily basis since 2008 and that has meant DAILY, come rain or shine… Until 2011 we lived in Kitsilano, then we moved to Mackenzie Heights. My daily bike ride has thus been around 6-8kms each way. I’m looking forward to getting back to biking regularly when I return from Berlin where I’m really enjoying riding public transit.

I ride a Rocky Mountains commuter bike for my commute and have also been riding to appointments around town by bike whenever I can. I almost never drive a car to work and rarely take the bus instead of the bike.

I’m reasonably fit for my age (mid-40s) due primarily to my many bike rides, some yoga and playing field hockey.

Oh, and my name is Julian Dierkes.
